What do I need to know before I register for the ATLS test?

Eligibility Requirements:

ATLS is typically designed for licensed medical professionals who are expected to provide the initial assessment and management of trauma patients. This includes doctors, surgeons, and sometimes advanced practice nurses and physician assistants.
Verify that you meet the specific eligibility criteria set by the ATLS provider in your region.

Course Preparation:

ATLS is a comprehensive course, and it’s recommended to review the current ATLS student manual before attending. The manual covers all the protocols, techniques, and knowledge areas that you will be tested on.
Some participants find it beneficial to familiarize themselves with trauma care principles, including reading relevant medical literature or participating in preparatory courses if available.

Course Format:

Understand the course format, which typically includes lectures, interactive discussions, hands-on practice stations, and simulation tests.
The course usually lasts 2-3 days, often over a weekend.

Registration Details:

Check for available course dates and locations. ATLS courses are offered at various times and places throughout the year by accredited providers.
Be aware of registration fees, which can vary significantly depending on your location and the facility offering the course.

Certification Duration and Renewal:

Know that your ATLS certification is typically valid for four years. After this period, you will need to take a refresher course or a re-certification test.
Understand the requirements for renewal early on, as they might include additional coursework or another examination.

Logistical Arrangements:

Consider travel and accommodation arrangements if the course location is not nearby.
Some courses might require you to bring specific items, such as a laptop or specific medical equipment for practice sessions.

Time Commitment:

Be prepared to commit fully to the duration of the course. The schedule can be intense, with early starts and late finishes to cover all necessary material.

Impact on Clinical Practice:

Reflect on how the ATLS certification will impact your clinical practice. It is widely recognized and often a requirement for those working in emergency departments and trauma centers.
