How do I register for the ATLS exam?

1. Find a Course Provider
ATLS courses are typically offered by hospitals, universities, or professional organizations involved in trauma care. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is the primary provider in the United States, but other countries might have different organizations.
You can start by checking the ACS website or contacting the trauma or education department of major hospitals in your area.

2. Choose a Course
ATLS courses are offered at various times throughout the year. Choose a course that fits your schedule and is available in your region.
Note that there are different types of courses: Provider Courses (for first-time certification) and Refresher Courses (for renewing certification).

3. Check the Requirements
Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for the ATLS course. This is generally targeted at medical professionals who may be required to manage trauma patients, including physicians, surgeons, and sometimes advanced practice nurses and physician assistants.
Some places may require you to provide proof of your medical credentials as part of the registration process.

4. Register for the Course
Once you've chosen a course, you can usually register online through the hosting organization's website. If online registration is not available, contact the course coordinator directly for registration instructions.
Be prepared to fill out a registration form and possibly submit additional documentation needed for the course.

5. Pay the Course Fee
Course fees can vary widely depending on the location and provider. Be prepared to pay the registration fee at the time of signing up. This fee typically covers the course materials, including the ATLS manual, as well as the costs associated with the instructional sessions and practical exams.
Payment methods generally include credit cards, bank transfers, or sometimes checks.

6. Receive Confirmation and Pre-course Materials
After registering and paying, you should receive a confirmation of your enrollment. This may come with pre-course materials that you are expected to review before attending the course.
Study these materials thoroughly as they form the basis of both the practical and written exams.

7. Prepare for the Course
Spend time reviewing the ATLS manual and any other materials provided.
Some candidates find it beneficial to participate in preparatory courses or study groups if this is their first time taking the course.

8. Attend the Course
Ensure you know the location, dates, and times of the course, and plan to arrive early on the first day.
The course typically involves lectures, hands-on practice, and simulated patient scenarios, culminating in both a practical and written test.
