What Is the ATLS program?

ATLS stands for Advanced Trauma Life Support. It is a training program that deals with the preparation of medical providers in the area of management of acute trauma cases. 

Can I retake the ATLS test?

You can retake the written ATLS test if you do not receive a passing score on your first attempt.

Can you fail ATLS?

You can fail the ATLS. 

If you do not achieve the minimum score required, which is 80%, you will not receive the ATLS certification. 

Is the ATLS program difficult?

Most students report that the 3-day course was helpful and not taxing to complete. The most challenging section of the program is reported to be the written exam.

What is the ATLS practical scenario?

The ATLS practical scenario involves the instructor describing a realistic trauma scenario to the tester. 

The tester will have to interact with either a live person or a mannequin and explain each step of the procedure to stabilize the victim. You will also ask the instructor for relevant details, such as vital signs and the patient's responsiveness.

Many students report that the hardest part of the ATLS is the written examination. 

How do I register for the ATLS program?

You can register for the ATLS program through the institution where you wish to take the course.


Usually, institutions will have their own online portal that handles registration. You should be able to find this on their website under the ATLS section. 

How soon can I retake the ATLS test?

You can retake the ATLS test within three months after you complete the course.
If you do not receive a passing score within those three months, you will need to take the course again.

How do I prepare for the ATLS?

To prepare for the ATLS, you should start by reading the ATLS textbook. It is recommended that you finish reviewing the textbook before attending your first lecture. 


You should also pay attention to your instructors, both during your theoretical lectures and during your practical exam. 


Remember to ask questions, as the lectures are usually treated as reviews. You should already know the material before attending, so you can ask your instructor for the necessary clarifications. 

How is the ATLS Test Scored?

The ATLS is scored on a 0 to 100% scale. 

When will I receive my ATLS test scores?

You can expect to receive your test scores on the same day as your examination.

How long are ATLS scores good for?

Your ATLS score is good for 4 years.


This means that if you receive a passing score, you will be certified for 4 years. After that period, you will need to take a refresher course or retake the entire ATLS course. 

How long should I study for the ATLS exam?

You should spend around 7 days actively preparing for the ATLS. 
This includes the time you spend going through the textbook, as well as your time spent in lectures/during practical exercises. 


Most students report that they achieved a passing score with this level of preparation. It is important to remember that everyone studies at their own pace. Make sure you assess how much time you need to review the material thoroughly. 

Is there an ATLS study manual?

There is an official ATLS study manual. 

The updated textbook for the ATLS 10th version is available for purchase online. 

Can I take a practice ATLS test?

You can take ATLS practice tests here. 
Taking a practice test will help you get familiar with the structure and assess your preparation level. 

What to expect on my ATLS exam day?

On your exam day, which is the third day of the ATLS course, you will be meeting with faculty before taking your test.


After the three-hour test, you will have another meeting with the course faculty. A selection of the Instructor Course participants will also take place. 

Can I wear a head covering during the exam?

Religious head-coverings are allowed during the ATLS. 
Any other type of head covering, such as hats, caps, or beanies, is not allowed, as well as anything that does not comply with the protocols of the hospital/institution. 

Can I have accommodations on the ATLS?

You can have accommodations on the ATLS. 
The ACS ATLS program complies with the ADA. If you require accommodations under the ADA, contact your institution.
